The Jewish roots of Christianity

Highlighting: OFF ON

Myles & Katharine Weiss

Greetings Haverim v’ Mishpochah, (Shalom, friends and family),

One of the psalms most familiar to Jewish Believers and to gentiles who support them conveys the power of unity:

Psalm 133
A song of ascents. By David:

1Oh, how good, how pleasant it is for brothers to live together in unity.

2It is like fragrant oil on the head that runs down over the beard, over the beard of Aaron, and flows down on the collar of his robes.

3It is like the dew of Hermon that settles on the mountains of Zion. For it was there that Adonai ordained the blessing of everlasting life.

We sing it at Shabbat services, exhort one another about its expression, and rejoice in the beautiful poetry of King David. I learned it in Hebrew School as a boy and sang it at Jewish summer camps decades ago. As with the whole Bible, the millennia have not diminished the truth of David’s words.

You and I live in a fascinating time—while prophetic Scriptures come to life in our era. In fact, as I like to say, today’s headlines are catching up to the Bible! David’s prayer for unity is a form of spiritual warfare, especially now, when Islamic jihad grows and Believers seek wisdom from the Lord.

For years, Katharine and I were deeply involved in pastoral “unity” movements in our country and Canada. These were not “ecumenical” gatherings. The leaders were Bible-believers who followed Jesus as Messiah and represented what we would call “life-giving” congregations. It was exciting to celebrate the 95% we had in common and not focus on the 5% (doctrine, practice, and style of worship) in which we differed. The lessons (below) that I learned during those movements helped me understand Jewish and gentile distinctions in today’s Messianic/Hebraic Roots/Israel-loving movements.

  • Unity is not uniformity! It is a spiritual act of God through which His love is shed in our hearts:

    Romans 5:5 (NASB)
…and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Salvation comes from above. This revelation had shocked me, a former New Age wanderer who practiced Buddhism and Hinduism until I concluded that I was definitely “at two” with the cosmos! I finally realized that, like salvation, true peace—reconciliation and unfolding destiny—could only come from Heaven. I could not attain salvation and peace on my own.
  • A price was paid! With Passover and Easter celebrations around the corner, Believers turn their thoughts to the nearly inexpressible power of the blood of the Lamb of God. Where would we be without the sinless blood of the Holy One shed on our behalf? How often do we fall short of God’s best, yet are able to turn to Him in repentance and thus reconnect with His grace?

I know, I know. Some readers will be offended that I mentioned Easter, anxious to let me know of Astarte/Isis mother-son myths and the pagan roots of Christianity’s spring celebration. Please spare me the letters. I celebrate the Lamb’s gift to me as a Jewish family member from the Jewish Messiah, the Savior of “whosoever will” (e.g. Matthew 10:32, Mark 3:35, Mark 8:34-35). The longer I celebrate His gift of salvation, the less I worry about the nitpicking religiosity that would rather divide and fuss than enjoy the mutuality of the one new man” (Eph. 2, especially verses 14-22).

Katharine and I, a gentile and Jew married for almost three decades, now conclude this: We will never be “Jewish enough” for some and will always be “too Jewish” for others.

Certainly we celebrate the “Jewishness” of our faith—through Shabbat, community, Holy days, and zeal for the Promised Land. As you discern from our commitment to Zola Levitt Ministries, we desire to educate and elevate the dialogue between Christians and Jews and see that the most unifying factor is the reality of Messiah.

We Believers are commanded to both fulfill Genesis 12:1–3 to “bless the sons of Abraham” and live more fully the imperative of Galatians 6:10: doing “good to all, especially those of the household of faith.”

Rubin

Khoury

One of the most effective ways to fulfill these commands is by coming with us to Israel. Zola Tours does it all: We take our pilgrims to Shiloh, the ancient home of the Ark of the Covenant, to bless and learn from modern Orthodox Jewish friends like David Rubin (far right). We learn from various Messianic Jewish leaders about life and faith in the Land. We host Arab-Christian heroes, like the Khoury family, who, at their peril, preach the Gospel of Yeshua in Bethlehem and stand with Israel. (Steven Khoury, shown right)

Our Fall Tour includes options to follow in Paul’s footsteps in Greece and Ephesus before the Israel portion and an excursion to Petra in Jordan afterward. Zola Tours Manager Sandra can help you select your pilgrimage. You are welcome to call her at 214-696-9760, email her at , or visit www.levitt.com/tours. Fall Tour dates:

It would be our privilege to host you as you experience the Bible come alive. As one recent pilgrim said—after bringing seven family members spanning four generations with us: “The Scriptures went from black and white to Technicolor!”

Katharine and I continually meet viewers who are blessed and instructed by our weekly television program, Zola Levitt Presents. We thank you for your faithful gifts of prayers and funds, which keep us on the air and standing for the Lord in the public square.

We endeavor to budget wisely and maximize the ministry’s effectiveness. In that spirit and due to the rising cost of TV airtime, we have decided to cancel our broadcasts on the TCT network. TCT viewers have many other options for viewing our programs, including Daystar, ABC Family, TLN (in some locations), and of course through levitt.tv, YouTube, and Roku. We offer a full schedule of airtimes and stations at levitt.com/airsch. For assistance in finding a way to watch our broadcasts, feel free to email us at or telephone our office at 214-696-8844.

The times we live in inspired us to call our next series Times of the Signs as we connect Scripture to current events. In this day of disinformation, revisionist history, and de-legitimizing all things Israel, ZLM is honored to bring you this new series. We want to state definitively for the media record and future generations our belief that the natural sons of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel (Jacob) are God’s choice as inheritors of the Promised Land. To that end, in this series we painstakingly teach on Jewish history in the Land, emphasizing the Temple Mount and the City of David. This series will equip viewers to answer objections and untruths about the most contested real estate on Earth!

In March, Zola Levitt Presents introduces Zion Forever, the long-awaited, nine-part series in which we look back at Israel’s history and forward into prophecy while remembering the present status of the contested Temple Mount. Zola’s music complements the narrative and scenes of Israel throughout the series.

The Place
The Holy of Holies stood on a foundation stone called, in Hebrew, HaMakom (The Place). In exploring the ancient City of David, we hear from knowledgeable guests that include archaeologist Eli Shukron, Hannah Ben Haim, and Eitan Shishkoff.
Western Wall
The Western Wall, once called the Wailing Wall but now called HaKotel (The Wall), is the closest that Jewish people can get to the ancient site of the Holy of Holies. After Myles shows us a Bar Mitzvah celebration at the Wall, we hear how King David purchased the threshing floor atop Mount Zion. Guests include Hannah Ben Haim and Eitan Shishkoff.
Southern Steps
Myles and Katharine walk along the southern edge of the Temple Mount, where Messiah and other worshipers would have entered. Archaeologist Dan Bahat tells us about the location. Our Man in Haifa, Eitan Shishkoff, looks to a future time when knowledge of the Lord covers the Earth.
Kidron Valley
The Kidron Valley lies between the Temple Mount and the Mount of Olives. From the valley, Myles and Katharine give us the history of Jerusalem. Archaeologist Shimon Gibson speaks from the Golden (Eastern) Gate where Messiah will enter when He comes again. We also hear from Eitan Shishkoff.
Valley of Elah
Young shepherd boy David slew the giant Philistine Goliath in the Valley of Elah. Here, Myles and Katharine recap the event. We present the walls of ancient Jebus (Jerusalem), the Gihon Spring where David’s forces invaded the city, and the tunnels at the southern end that may have provided the final resting place for Judean kings. Guests include Eli Shukron, Shimon Gibson, Shahar Shilo, and Eitan Shishkoff.

We are blessed to hear from Eitan Shishkoff throughout this series. “Our Man in Haifa” sent us a copy of his latest book, “What About Us? — The end-time calling of Gentiles in Israel’s revival.” It is a valuable resource, and I recommend that you read it. Clearly written from a biblical and thoughtful viewpoint, it addresses the issues of unity in a masterful way. It is available at smile.Amazon.com.

Thanks for staying with us—on the airwaves, over the Internet, through the mail, and via prayer. God is most certainly blessing you and me as we pull together as a team—all to His glory!

Your brother and messenger,
Myles Myles

P.S. As the darkness of Islamic jihad arises, we Believers must allow the Spirit to guide the Body in unity!

This observance reminds us of the Israelites’ rescue from Egyptian bondage, plus we remember Messiah’s last supper, a Passover Seder. What’s so unique about this Haggadah is its focus on Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah and his teaching, especially on his last night in the upper room. You'll find words and sheet music for the songs traditionally sung on Passover. The popular Complete Jewish Bible is used for translations where Scripture is quoted.

Ruth: Your People Shall Be My People
