The Citadel (“Tower of David”)
The Citadel (“Tower of David”)

One of three surviving towers and surrounding fortresses built by Herod the Great to defend Jerusalem. The Citadel was restored in the 12th and 14th centuries by the Crusaders and the Mamelukes, but most of the present structures are from the A.D. 1540 restoration of Suleiman the Magnificent.

The Citadel is also known as the Tower of David because it is thought that Herod built it on the site of an earlier fortress built by King David.
